Q Hisashi Shibata is a Japanese artist and designer based in Amsterdam. His practice moves between jewellery, ceramics, costume and performance, exploring the space between the body, material and everyday life.

Working largely by hand, Hisashi allows the character of the material to become part of the work. Porcelain, clay, silver, glaze and gold are shaped into objects that are tactile, playful and often unexpected. Jewellery becomes more than decoration: something to wear, encounter and experience.

In 2016 he launched ShinkaQ. Shinka carries two meanings in Japanese: evolution (進化) and true value (真価). The name reflects an ongoing interest in making, transformation and the value of the handmade in an increasingly digital world.

His work continues to move freely between wearable objects and art — always with curiosity, a sense of humour and room for imperfection.
